Facts about the automobile manufacturer SsangYong

The car manufacturer Ssangyong was founded in 1954 as the Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Workshop in South Korea's capital of Seoul. Initially, the company produced jeeps for the US Army. After the acquisition of various Korean vehicle manufacturers, the Shinjin Jeep Motor Co. joint venture was established in 1974 with Shinjin Motors. Jeeps and special vehicles were continued to be built in the following years. In 1986 the company of the SsangYong group, a Korean business conglomerate, was acquired and incorporated into the group. It was also renamed the SsangYong Motor Company. An off-road vehicle licensed by Jeep was built at this time, the Korando model. In 1991, cooperation with Mercedes-Benz took place. Between 1997 and 2000 Ssangyong briefly belonged to Daewoo Motors. The cooperation with Mercedes-Benz brought the SUV and pick-up model Musso, which was built between 1993 and 2005, as well as the SsangYong Chairman Luxury sedan, introduced in 1998. The successor to the Ssangyong Korando, the Ssangyong Kyron, was presented in 2005. Since 2011 the SsangYong Motor Company has been majority owned by the Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
